Online Radicalization – Myth and Reality

Politics & Society
re:publica Dublin 2016

Description:

The talk explains the Islamic State's online "ecosystem" and examines the often-stated idea that the group radicalises and recruits people via the internet and especially social media. It shows that the vast majority of cases of recruitment requires face to face interaction, though the internet plays a role in brand-building and for female recruits.

The talk will also discuss counter-measures, showing that censorship of content removal is just one, and not necessarily the most effective, way of countering online radicalization.
