Reappropriate public space: Hands on with Italo Calvino's Invisible Cities

re:publica Dublin 2016

Description:

Most of the projects i worked on around Public Space came from aknowledging the city by walking randomly in it. With my prior collective we worked around Italo Calvino's Invisible city, a masterpiece of literature with an urbanistic undertone. In this book Calvino discribes 55 invented cities in three pages or less. We went out with those texts into the city and try to find the paradoxes he was talking about and implement small hacks in the city through the eyes of his writing.

Making randomly associations gave us the possibility to look at the city through another light.

In this workshop each participant (max 15) gets one of the 55 chapters in his/her hands, he/she has a few minutes to read it through and then we go out for 30 min into the city, trying to find association between the chapter we just read and the things we see, trying to bring a small hack to improve the city through that prism. The last part would be to share the ideas and thoughts we encountered within the process.
