Not Yet Switched to Auto Pilot

Prashanth Halady from Bosch talks about tomorrow’s car in his speech “Beyond driving - how a car of the near future could look like” during our re:think Mobility track. With a concept vehicle serving as an example, he explains its new possibilities to us.

Bosch’s concept vehicle looks futuristic: numerous displays, blinking LEDs, and a digital steering wheel one can find in a Formula 1 car. In simulation mode the car can already drive by itself. These new “automated cars” change mobility, according to Prashanth Halady, Director of Bosch's Human Machine Interfaces Center: “Self-propelled cars are the most incisive change in the history of the automobile industry.”

In theory, the cars can replace the driver when necessary. In cases when he or she needs to answer a call, for example. The driver may also steer the car and use smart-home-technology at the same time, opening its door at home for a package delivery, for instance. Countless detectors and modern technology make this possible. In future, the borders between office, home, and vehicle may dissipate. The long-term goal is a car without a steering wheel that can drive completely autonomously.

Today, the Bosch car can only drive in simulation, due to insufficient digital infrastructure. The concept vehicle lacks an internet connection with a high transfer rate, something 5G could offer. This technology is only available in few parts of the world, however. Legislation has not been adjusted to the existence of auto pilot functions yet, either. Data protection and car safety were both pressing issues of concern for the audience listening to the speech and asking questions that have not yet been answered. There is plenty of time left, however, to come up with answers: According to Halady, the technical implementation of the car will only happen in another five years.
